Post-Holiday FREE COVID-19 Testing January 4th and 11th Sponsored by the Highlands Cashiers Health Foundation
The Highlands Cashiers Health Foundation (HCHF) is sponsoring local COVID-19 testing initiatives on the plateau January 4 and January 11. The format will be drive-through at the Village Green in Cashiers from 11:00am-1:00pm and the Highlands Recreation Center from 2:30pm-4:30pm. To ensure adequate testing supplies on the day of, participants are encouraged to notify Mountain Park Urgent Care of your interest to particpate at firstname.lastname@example.org.
“This post-holiday timeframe is a critical time to be tested because CDC and science tells us positive cases will likely increase after travel and gatherings with family and friends. Identifying people with the virus helps to avoid a sudden spike, slow the rate of new infections, lower the overall number of cases, ease the pressure on health services, keep our schools open, workforce employed and community activity flowing.” Dr. Richard Ellin, Board member and leader of the HCHF testing project.
Participants will be asked to present a photo ID and insurance information on site. Uninsured participants are eligible to participate without cost, however a photo I.D. is required. Confidential results will be provided directly to participants by phone.
The tests will be administered by Mountain Park Urgent Care (MPUC), Sylva, NC in full compliance with CDC, FDA, and NCDHHS guidelines. The County Health Departments are provided COVID-19 test reports as required by NCDHHS.
Please note a COVID-19 test is a one-time indicator. Frequent hand washing, covering your face, and social distancing at least six feet apart are also important to protect yourself and others and to slow the spread of COVID-19. Life during the pandemic is stressful enough but imagine losing your job and being threatened with eviction in less than 24 hours. That’s what happened to Tyler*, who came to Pisgah Legal Services for help.
Pisgah Legal Housing Attorney, Molly Maynard explains, “When Tyler and his roommates all lost their jobs in March, like so many people have in this pandemic, they struggled to make rent. Rather than working with them or even attempting to follow the legal eviction process, their landlord demanded they give her their keys and leave immediately, with nowhere to go. She even entered their house in the middle of the night, yelling at them to get out. That kind of thing would never be legal but was especially shocking and scary for them because of the health concerns it presents right now.”
“Pisgah Legal keeps people from taking advantage of the working poor.” – Tyler
Tyler says, “Molly explained our rights as renters and told us we couldn’t be evicted right now. The landlord didn’t believe me when I told her I had access to a lawyer.” Then Molly contacted Tyler’s landlord.
Tyler says that Pisgah Legal’s intervention changed everything for him and his roommates. “After Pisgah Legal got involved and called our landlord, she calmed down, stopped the harassment and started talking about setting up a payment plan.”
Soon after, Tyler found a new construction job. He and his roommates also found new places to live and moved.
He says, “It’s reassuring that Pisgah Legal Services is in our community. This kind of thing happens all the time to renters. You all are a great resource for working-class people.”
