Why was the Highlands Cashiers Health Foundation established?

Our new Foundation was established because its original purpose to support the Highlands Cashiers Hospital was no longer in compliance with IRS 501 c3 rules.   This transition was made necessary on February 1, 2019 by the completed purchase of our local hospital by HCA Healthcare, a commercially-operated for profit entity. Our new Foundation is filed with the state as a public, 501 c 3 charity and has retained its original EIN Tax ID number.

What is the purpose of the new Foundation?

Our new purpose is broadened to improve the health and well-being of our Highlands Cashiers communities and surrounding area.

How will the priority areas of support be determined by the Foundation?

The Foundation staff and Board members are working vigorously and thoughtfully to identify and prioritize key strategic areas of support.  The process will include 1) Five commonly accepted Social Determinants of Health: health and healthcare, education, economic stability, social and community context, and neighborhood and built environment 2) data assessment and research provided to us by the Dogwood Health Trust and 3) input from our community and donors. With open minds and listening ears our Programs and Grants committee will recommend the categorical focus areas for funding to the Board.  Once the strategic priorities are determined further community outreach will involve convening and collaborating with nonprofits, community organizations, and donors. We are excited to manifest the opportunities that will meaningfully impact positive change for improving the health and well-being for the people we serve.

What is the Foundation’s relationship with the Dogwood Health Trust?

The Highlands Cashiers Health Foundation is a separate entity, completely operating under the governance of its own Board of Directors. Dogwood Health Trust, a private, non-operating foundation, is providing infrastructure support for establishing six regional Foundations in the eighteen county Western North Carolina area.  We are all working toward the same goal to improve the health and well-being for all people in our three geographic regions (west, central, and east).   Dogwood Heath Trust is also a valuable resource for providing data and research regarding the social determinants of health. There will be collaborative grant opportunities with Dogwood Health Trust that not only benefit our local communities but will also serve our six westernmost counties of North Carolina as well as the 18-county region.

What is the geographic area served by the Highlands Cashiers Health Foundation?

The Highlands Cashiers Health Foundation primary geographic service area encompasses the Highlands Cashiers plateau and surrounding communities.  In addition, our newly formed purpose includes regional opportunities within the six western most counties of Macon, Jackson, Swain, Graham, Clay and Cherokee counties in collaboration with the Nantahala Health Foundation and Dogwood Health Trust on regional initiatives.

What are social determinants of health?

There is no single definition of the social determinants of health, but there are recognized commonalities defining social factors that impact human health.  These include the social and economic conditions that influence individual and group differences in health status. They are the underlying factors in one’s living conditions.  Five commonly accepted determinants include: economic stability, education, social and community context, health and healthcare, neighborhood and built environment.

Will the Foundation be fund raising?

Yes. Continued support from our donor community is essential to our success. We are profoundly grateful for the past enduring support of our generous donors. We hope their abiding friendships will continue as investments in the core communities where our donors live will continue. Our new purpose builds upon our donor legacy of compassion and a shared vision of healthy and vibrant communities. We are fully committed to excellence in stewardship of donor philanthropy.

How can organizations seek funding support from the Highlands Cashiers Health Foundation?

The Foundation’s Grants and Programs committee will oversee the grant making process with staff guidance. Grant application and review procedures will be published online. Grant awards will be recommended by the committee and approved by the Board of Directors.
