BEE Kind: How Being Outdoors Improves Our Mental Health

In our fast-paced world dominated by technology and constant noise, the stresses of daily life can often feel overwhelming. However, a simple yet powerful remedy for this modern malaise lies right outside our doors – in the tranquil beauty of Highlands and Cashiers.

The natural wonders of Highlands and Cashiers offer a serene environment that promotes relaxation and stress relief. Whether you’re hiking the trails of Whiteside Mountain, enjoying a picnic by Lake Glenville, or savoring the sweeping views from Sunset Rock, the sights and sounds of nature on the plateau work harmoniously to calm the mind and relax the body.

Nature plays a vital role in reducing stress and enhancing relaxation. The sensory experience of being surrounded by the natural world can soothe our nervous system, lower cortisol levels, and alleviate feelings of tension and anxiety. A simple walk in the woods, a peaceful picnic, or moments spent in a garden can offer a much-needed escape from the pressures of everyday life.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Highlands Cashiers Health Foundation is excited to partner once again with the Counseling Center of Highlands to encourage everyone to BEE Kind. Established in May 2023, BEE Kind is an initiative focused on highlighting the importance of mental health. The Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust will be hosting a Sunset Walk to Sunset Rock on May 20th and a Meditation Walk on May 28. The Highlands Biological Foundation is hosting Experiencing Nature with Maddie Wikstrom on May 21.
